Program Introduction
Disaster risk reduction is the concept and practice of reducing disaster risks through systematic efforts to analyse and reduce the causal factors of disasters. Reducing exposure to hazards, lessening vulnerability of people and property, wise management of land and the environment, and improving preparedness and early warning for adverse events are all examples of disaster risk reduction. Disaster risk reduction (DRR) aims to reduce socio-economic vulnerabilities to disaster as well as dealing with the environmental and other hazards that trigger them.
This 5 days training will provide the participants with the deep understanding of what the DRR is and how the disaster risks can be managed or mitigated. By the end of the course the attendees will be able to describe the components of disaster risk management, identify community vulnerability and capacities to deal with natural hazards, have strategies to strengthen the role of different organisations and groups in disaster risk management and be aware of the role of local aid workers in disaster management and additional needs to strengthen their participation in overall mechanism of disaster risk reduction.

- Organising and conducting a participatory risk assessment
- Planning DRR strategies appropriate to the context
- Monitoring and evaluating the impact of DRR strategies
- How to incorporate DRR into various humanitarian sectors
Program Outcome
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the humanitarian context and underlying principles that inform disaster risk reduction
- Conduct a risk analysis that effectively identifies hazards, capacities and vulnerabilities of a community
- Identify the stages of the disaster management cycle and appropriate DRR activities at each stage
- Understand ways of strengthening the participation of local aid workers and different organisations in overall mechanisms of disaster risk reduction
- Build collaborative partnerships and effectively coordinate DRR activities with key stakeholders
- Monitor and evaluate risk reduction impacts of programmes
- Effectively navigate the resources relating to DRR and resilience that can inform activities
- Describe the importance of using a participatory approach throughout the disaster management cycle
